The city was also called “Bhadgaon” (The City Of Devotees), is the representative ancient city in the Kathmandu Valley as same as Kathmandu. This Bhaktapur remains the townscape built in the middle age the best among the cities of Newari tribe. Compare to the noisy Kathmandu, Bhaktapur stands on the hill in the farm land and is a small quiet town with the population 220 thousands having relaxed atmosphere. About 80 % of citizens are Wari tribe and engage themselves in farming.
The great earthquake in 1934 destroyed many temples, monasteries and private houses. After 1970, the reconstruction of the city processed and the Newari tribe’s splendid architectures and sculptures can be seen today, which are proud of in the world. Strolling around the townscape built with red bricks makes you feel mysterious as if you were in the middle age. Also, in the fine day, you can view the Himalayas.
Nagarkot is located about 32 km north-east from Kathmandu and 2,175m in altitude. It is surrounded by the mountains of Himalayas and the best location to view a morning sun to rise. There are many accommodation facilities in Nagarkot. In addition, you do not have to trek to go there (you can go there by plane and by car), so it is very popular. In the early morning, the scenery of Nagarkot is most beautiful. The Himalayas ranging 200km from east to west and Mt. Everest in the east, Mt. Dorje Lakpa in front and Annapurna in the west are floated up in the morning sunlight.
From Nagarkot to the Chang Narayan Temple, enjoy hiking for about 4 hours. The first half is from Nagarkot to Telkot takes about 2 hours by walking slowly. There is no ascent, and go forward on the gradual descent along the private houses. On a fine day, you could view the Himalayas.
The latter half is from Telkot to Chang Narayan takes about 2 hours. If you want, you could ride in a car to Telkot and start hiking there. After going through the lignosa band on the gradual asecent for 30 minutes from Telkot, a view opens out. Walk comfortably on the ridgeway to view the cities of Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. After going forward along the ridge for about 1 hour, see the World Heritage Site Chang Narayan Temple.
Chang Narayan Temple is one of the oldest Hinduism temples in Nepal. In the 15 century, it was destroyed by the invasion of the Mughal (Mogul) Empire. The temple at present is rebuilt in 1702. It was adapted the valuable Newari manners in the first period, and the delicate decorations made on the parts of temple are worth seeing.
