The admired wonders..!!!

Frescos in the Shekhawati region

Shekhawati is a region in the Rajasthan state near Delhi. In 1549, Maharaja Sheka constructed the town. “Sheka” is the name of king and the word of ”wati” means garden. The town name Shekhawati is “garden of king, Garden of Sheka”. In Shekhawati, there were 25 villages. Among them, it is said Mandawa is the most beautiful. The must-see is the traditional houses called “Haveli” in this region which are decorated lavishly (luxuriously, gorgeously). Mandawa prospered as a transfer point on the Silk Road, and the “Marwari Merchants” expanded (their businesses) to the various places. In order to show their wealth, they decorated the walls of their Haveli with frescos. Also, these frescos gave colors in the life in Rajasthan surrounded by the dreary deserts.

  • Entrance of the “Chokhani Double Haveli”
This Haveli is used by an employee at present. The exterior walls at the entrance are depicted with the elephants hang their noses down mean “Welcome”. Blue is the color of lapis lazuli in Afghanistan, symbolized wealth. The color of yellow on the elephant bodies is painted by the pigment made with the urine of elephant ate Mango and the minerals were mixed.

The motifs of frescos mainly come from the Indian myths. In addition, the motifs of railroad and plane in the modern Europe were depicted by listening to talks. Some of them are introduced here.

The Gulub Rai Radia Haveli is built in 1863 and the walls to the street are depicted interestingly. Approaching to the Haveli, see the motifs of elephants mean “welcome” at first. Then, below the elephants were depicted the life of people and railway. In 1852, a train was run in Mumbay at first in India. In 1922, a train was run in Rajasthan. This Haveli was built in 1863, and a drawing of “not seen train and railroad” was depicted. In that railway coach, “Kama Sutra” was depicted. The painter might imagine the railroad was a large world and there were anything in the railway coaches.

  • On the side wall of Gulub Rai Radia Haveli

  • Motifs of “Elephants are welcoming”

  • In that railway coach, “Kama Sutra” was depicted.

  • “Bullfight”

Other attractive frescos are seen here and there in the city. This fresco indicates the strong admiration to the modern culture in Europe.  Telephone, bicycle, plane…

  • Here are a plane and a bicycle

And the most vivid Haveli is the Nadine le prince Haveli in Fatehpur. In the beginning of 19th century, a Frenchman Nadine le prince repaired the Haveli of Devra Family in 1998 and it is used as a museum now.
