Mahabalipuram is situated by the Bay of Bengal, approx. 60km south of Chennai. In spite of a small town, the World Heritage Site of this town consists of many monuments. The monuments are largely divided into 2 groups, which are called "Shore Temple" and "Monuments Area". Shore Temple was built in the 8th century. Just like the name, it is built just by the sea shore, and showing a beautiful silhouette of the temple buildings standing close to each other. Because of the location, it had been affected by the waves and winds, though now it is protected by the planted windbreak forest. This temple is built by piling up the stones, which required a very high technology for the time of building. In the Monuments Area, "Arujuna's Penance", the world's largest relief, is the best highlight after all. On the relief, it looks as if the Ganga were just about to flow out and the sculptures of the trainees or animals were about to start moving. Do not miss the other highlights such as the reliefs in the caves of Krishna Cave Temple and Varaha Cave Temple, or barely balanced Krishna's Butter Ball. The other monuments include "Five Rathas" built in the 7th century, which can be called the prototype of the Dravidian architecture. It is said that the temples in South India after Five Rathas were modeled after any of the five stone carved temples. You will find the features of each of the five temples as if you were reading a pictorial book for the South Indian temple architecture.
