The beauty of architecture of the stepwell in Gujarat
You will visit the two stepwells of Dada Hari Ni Vav and Adalaj Vav in the suburbs of Ahmedabad. In Gujarat stepwells are well developed due to its climate of high temperature and low precipitation. Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat, is one of the rapidly-growing cities, attracts foreign companies and its population is said to exceed 6 million. The locals of this state speak Gujarati as well as Hindi. This is the only dry state in India. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, is from this state. This town was built in 1411 by Ahmed Shah I, a sultan of Gujarat, after whom this city is named "Ahmedabad". In Ahmedabad you can find many valuable buildings such as the traditional Islamic architecture which still remains in the old city, the characteristic underground structure of the "stepwell", many of which remain in Gujarat and Rajasthan, or the buildings designed by Cobusier, which makes this city one of the most important cities for the modern architecture.
  • Sanskar Kendra

Designed by Le Corbusier and built in 1985. It is one of the 3 museums designed by him, the others being Chandigarh Museum and National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Japan. It displays the history and culture of Ahmedabad including kites that are extremely popular there.

  • Dada Hari Ni Vav
Many "stepwells" are found in Gujarat or Rajasthan, where people constantly face shortage of water. This is a very artistic stepwell with sophisticated sculptures on its wall and is extremely cold from the inside.

  • Adalaj Vav
A stepwell in the village of Adalaj, 20km away from the center of Ahmedabad. It is contemporary with Dada Hari Ni Vav and their architectural styles are similar to each other. It is very well preserved and was so elaborately designed that it looks like a temple or palace.

  • Mill Owners' Association Building
It was built in 1954 and designed by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier and is considered to be one of "the three great masters of modern architecture", This building is designed to work without electricity maintaining complete harmony between light, wind and nature.

  • Indian Institute of Management
Designed by the American architect Louis Kahn, one of the most important architects of the 20th century, and built in 1962. He worked on nationally important projects in Bangladesh and India and built some buildings with modern architecture fully using his technology and short supply building materials. Indian Institute of Management is one of the most excellent institutes in India and many people came to study here from all over the world.
