(From Delhi or cities in India, fly to Ahmedabad, the largest city in the state of Gujarat.)

After arrival, meet a guide and tour the old city of Ahmedabad (Jay Shree Swaminarayan, Jama Masjid, Teen Darwaza, Relief in the Sidi Saiyad Mosque, walking in the old city.) Savor the Thali of Gujarat cuisine for lunch at the House of MG, a heritage hotel in the old city. In the afternoon, tour the step well of Dada Hari (ni Vav) in the suburbs of Ahmedabad.

In the morning, head to Patan by a private car (about 2 hours). Visit the woven artisans in Patan is known the Double Ikat “Patola.” Then, tour the step well Rani ki Vav and Modhera Sun Temple, and go back to Ahmedabad. If time is allowed, guide you in Ahmedabad again. After that, go to the airport of Ahmedabad.

In the old city, there are a historical building, a step well, an architecture Le Corbusier (an architect) constructed and the place noted in Gandhi. Visit Patan the village of world famous Double Ikat "Patola"
Patola is the Double Ikat (the splashed warp and woof thread patterns). At first, assuming the final design with the warp thread and woof thread, die the threads and weave. It takes more than 3months to weave one piece of sari in all processes of Patola. Producing the Patola is required very high skills, and at present, only three families succeed to this artificial culture.
Villagers maintain the traditional life style
Outside of Ahmedabad are scattered villages in which people wear the folk (tribal) costumes as if appealing the traditional Gujarat flavor. If lucky, may encounter a caravan of the Rabari roaming around.

Drinking
The state of Gujarat is the state of prohibiting drinking. Therefore, people are not allowed to drink in the public places such as restaurants and if you want to drink, you may do within your hotel room. Buying a bottle of alcoholic is limited at a shop having the liquor permission during shop open hours. If you want to buy alcoholic drinks at the locale, please tell us before your departure, then we inform the guide on it beforehand. Also, please prepare the copies of passport, India visa, and India immigration stamp.

Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is the largest city of Gujarat state with rapid growth and exceeding population predicted to cross 6 million soon. It is the only dry state in the country. It was built in 1411 by Ahmed Shah I, the then sultan of Gujarat, after whom this city was named. Due to its extremely refined policies and operations, it has been attracting numerous foreign companies. Ahmedabad is the birth city of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation and is also a hub of traditional Islamic architecture like stepwells with old remains.
  • Dada Hari Ni Vav
    Many "stepwells" are found in Gujarat or Rajasthan, where people constantly face shortage of water. This is a very artistic stepwell with sophisticated sculptures on its wall and is extremely cold from the inside.

  • Teen Darwaza - Three consecutive gates

    It is an array of three consecutive gates standing on the east side of Bhadra Fort and called as Teen Darwaza. It was built for the kings of those times to watch if people are walking in line to Jama Masjid.

  • Sidi Saiyad Mosque
    This mosque is popular for its beautiful stone openwork and was built in 1573 by Sidi Saiyad, who was a slave to Ahmed Shah.

  • Jama Masjid (Friday mosque)
    It is the largest mosque in Ahmedabad built by Ahmed Shah in 1423. There are 15 domes of different heights supported by as many as 260 pillars. To signify the importance of material for Hindu or Jain temple, there were sculptures of the lotus flower or the Vajra carved on the pillars of this mosque.

  • Sanskar Kendra

    Designed by Le Corbusier and built in 1985. It is one of the 3 museums designed by him, the others being Chandigarh Museum and National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Japan. It displays the history and culture of Ahmedabad including kites that are extremely popular there.

     

  • Mill Owners' Association Building
    It was built in 1954 and designed by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier and is considered to be one of "the three great masters of modern architecture", This building is designed to work without electricity maintaining complete harmony between light, wind and nature.


Modhera Sun Temple

In 11th century, this temple was constructed by King Bhimdev I. As to Sun Temple, the Surya Temple in Konark, the State of Orissa is designated as the World Heritage site is famous. This Modhera Surya Temple is 200 years younger than that. It is built the sunlight shines into the main shrine in which the Sun God Surya is worshiped, only for two days in a year. There are 52 pcs of pillars on which the scenes (episodes) of Ramayana and Mahabharata are carved and on the exterior walls the intricate carvings are made, as well.
  • Sun Tmple
    Depicted the scenes of Ramayana and Mahabharata on 52 pcs of pillars, inside (of the temple) 12 niches exist showing the changes of the Sun God Surya by month.

  • Surya Kundo is a step well in the shape of rectangular.
    Inside (of the well-building) 108 pcs of shrines exist and in the wall a small shrine is made to worship (enshrine) the avatars (incarnations) of Ganesh, Lord Vishnu and Shiva.


Rani Ki Vav Tour the queen’s step well

In June 2014, a step well has been registered as the World Heritage site is located in the suburbs of Patan. This well is constructed by a queen who was a dowager of the Solanki dynasty in 11th century for her King’s memory and fame.
A “step well” is the well typically made in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan where suffer from the chronical water shortage. The step well was used as not only supplying water to people, but also employing for a natural cooler utilizing evaporative cooling. On the wall of well, carved the Hindu deities and fables delicately is a kind of art makes people who are cooling, have an enjoyable time.
Rani ki Vav is the oldest step well in Gujarat, a rectangular in shape; 64m in length, 20m in width and 27m in depth and consists of 7 layers. On the wall, more than 800 pcs of reliefs of Hindu deities are depicted. Especially, the beauty and exquisiteness of relief of the avatar (incarnation) Lord Vishnu fascinates. Rani ki Vav was forgotten for a while due to the Saraswati River overflowed caused the Vav was covered with sand. After 1958, the Archeological Survey of India dug up and repaired it, revealed all the Rani ki Vav again. Being under sands kept it as it was beautiful in the past.

Patan Patola (splashed pattern / Double Ikat)

Among the splashed patterns, Patola is required very high skills to produce. At first, all craftsmen input the final design in their memories. The first process is to die the thread of warp and the thread of woof. Bundling a thin silk thread, and tied by a cotton thread at many places and die, untied and die and continue the processes to die more than 10 colors. A wart thread died up by calculating intricately is set and stretch on the weaving machine, and a woof thread is wound on the shuttle. It is processed by one pair of craftsmen / craftswomen to weave up. The colors of warp thread and woof thread should be matched up by o.1mm. Having matched the colors, the bright color patters are appeared (showed). At present, there is not many people exist who are succeeded in this high skill and it is said only the Salvi family in Patan. Patola is not sold in a market, but it is produced by order made system. One sally costs one car. It is said if a daughter wears a sally made of Patola that Salvi wove at her wedding ceremony, the family’s class becomes higher.
