The admired wonders..!!!

Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram
(World Heritage Site)

Mahabalipuram is situated by the Bay of Bengal, approx. 60km south of Chennai. In spite of a small town, the World Heritage Site of this town consists of many monuments. The monuments are largely divided into 2 groups, which are called "Shore Temple" and "Monuments Area". Shore Temple was built in the 8th century. Just like the name, it is built just by the sea shore, and showing a beautiful silhouette of the temple buildings standing close to each other. Because of the location, it had been affected by the waves and winds, though now it is protected by the planted windbreak forest. This temple is built by piling up the stones, which required a very high technology for the time of building. In the Monuments Area, "Arujuna's Penance", the world's largest relief, is the best highlight after all. On the relief, it looks as if the Ganga were just about to flow out and the sculptures of the trainees or animals were about to start moving. Do not miss the other highlights such as the reliefs in the caves of Krishna Cave Temple and Varaha Cave Temple, or barely balanced Krishna's Butter Ball. The other monuments include "Five Rathas" built in the 7th century, which can be called the prototype of the Dravidian architecture. It is said that the temples in South India after Five Rathas were modeled after any of the five stone carved temples. You will find the features of each of the five temples as if you were reading a pictorial book for the South Indian temple architecture.

  • Shore Temple, built with the highly developed technology of piling up stones

  • Draupadi's Ratha and Arjuna Ratha of Five Rathas with the lion's sculpture at the front

  • Shore Temple behind the Bay of Bengal

  • Krishna's Butter Ball

Kanchipuram, one of the Sapta Puri

77km from Chennai. After the green rural areas, you will find a town with many gopurams (the monumental tower at the entrance of a temple) rising high. That's the town of Kanchipuram, one of the seven holiest cities in India (Sapta Puri). It is said there are around 200 temples from small to big in this town, and the present town is situated in the center of the old capital city of Pallava dynasty, which prospered in the 7th to 8th centuries. The Kailasanathar Temple, built in the 8th century, is especially said to be the most beautiful in Kanchipuram. It is said that it was modeled after Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram, containing small shrines along the corridor surrounding the temple. It also has the beautiful reliefs. Sri Ekambaranathar Temple is the largest temple in this town built in the 16th to 17th centuries, long after Kailasanathar Temple. The term "Ekambaranathar" means "king of mango" and there is an interesting story for the mango tree standing by the main hall, which is said to be 3500 years old and bears the fruits of four different tastes, hot, sour, sweet and bitter. It is the folklore that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married under the tree. Unfortunately the tree was replaced by another just a while ago, though the new tree is still believed to have a power that those who eat the mango will have a baby. This town is also very famous in all over India as a silk producing center, having the history of the silk weaving products starting around the 3rd century AD. The weaving technology developed in the town which is considered a holy place is high, which makes it possible for the high quality silk products to be available with the reasonable prices.
And the most vivid Haveli is the Nadine le prince Haveli in Fatehpur. In the beginning of 19th century, a Frenchman Nadine le prince repaired the Haveli of Devra Family in 1998 and it is used as a museum now.
  • Kailasanathar Temple

  • Sri Ekambaranathar Temple, dedicated for Lord Shiva

  • Sri Ekambaranathar Temple, dedicated for Lord Shiva

  • The first mango tree of Sri Ekambaranathar Temple. Still worshipped in a hall after it fell down.
